Musically Medicated

It was in February of 2008 when I crossed paths with unconventional independent film maker, Gabriele Kislat. We were meeting at a small breakfast restaurant to discuss some ideas I had about making some PSA's for my non profit MAPMusic ((( Musicians Against Parkinson's ))). It was one of those rare occasions when you instantly connect with a person and feel like, "Yeah, I'm suppose to meet you".

By the end of our meeting Gabriele (or Gabi as she's better known in my life) presented me with an amazing opportunity. She would organize and film my first MAPMusic ((( Musicians Against Parkinson's ))) Awareness Concert where I would perform with my new band The Dangerous Crayons. For more information on this concert please visit the MAPMusic.org website.

A couple of weeks after the filming of that concert maybe less but certainly not more Gabi and her boyfriend/sound engineer Emory Murchison invited me to their home. Greeted with a beverage and the friendly licks and excited sounds from their dog Masha, we made our way into their living room.

I could see just from being in their home how much film and sound had been edited into their lives. To the right was a television, to the left was a sofa and everywhere in between was screaming Hot Smoked Pictures. I hadn't known Gabi or Emory for any great length of time but in the short time that I had known them they had shown a great deal of enthusiasm for what they do. That was refreshing.

Gabi has the same amount of love and respect for film making as I do for making music so when they asked if I would be interested in sharing my story and allow them to film a documentary it was out of the appreciation I have for that respect that i said yes.

In the last year I've laughed, cried, danced, taken road trips, flown to Texas, been in studio, on stage, surprised, shocked, determined, devastated and everything in between. Around the time that Hot Smoked Pictures began filming was around the same time that I was becoming addicted to my Parkinson's medication and was beginning to develop obsessive compulsive behavioral disorders as a result.

Filming of the documentary Musically Medicated continues and no final filming dates have been set. For more information on this film and Hot Smoked Pictures please visit their official website http://www.hotsmokedpictures.com
